Norway had gone nearly three decades without playing in the World Cup, so when the country finally qualified for the tournament, Patrick de Souza Tuntland decided he would travel to New York with 10 friends to cheer, party and row.

In all, he spent 12 days in the United States, attending games and sightseeing along the East Coast. It was “so much better than we could have dreamed about,” he said. “Honestly, it’s been the time of my life.”

In all, his trip cost $5,619: “Talking about the cost almost doesn’t make sense,” Tuntland said. “I would do it all again 100 times.”

When Norway played Senegal, the friends began their day at a party in Manhattan. They took a train to MetLife Stadium ($98 roundtrip) and dodged a downpour on their way to more pre-game festivities. After the game, a 3-2 victory that guaranteed Norway would make the Round of 32, his friends all agreed it was one of the best days of their lives.

Tuntland’s ticket for that game, purchased through the Norwegian soccer federation, cost $465. (To ensure they’d be selected in the draw to buy World Cup tickets, Tuntland and his friends attended some of Norway’s qualifying matches.) Tuntland saved by staying at a friend’s house in New York.

Tuntland, whose father is Brazilian, took a day trip to Philadelphia to see Brazil play Haiti ($804 for the ticket, $50 for the bus). He and his friends also traveled to Boston ($89 by train) for a couple of nights ($273 per person in a shared Airbnb) to go to Norway’s final group-stage game, against France ($265).

Tuntland estimates he spent $1,400 on food and drinks and another $700 on sightseeing — for instance, attending a show (“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” $77 and “very funny”) and visiting the Empire State Building ($80). He also went to the Knicks parade (free and “very cool”).

In hindsight, perhaps the friend group could have saved money by going to less expensive restaurants. But Tuntland has no regrets. Now that he’s back in Norway — where he’ll spend the rest of the summer because the World Cup wiped out his travel budget — he said he still daydreams about the trip.
