Both Elversberg and Mainz arrived at the Ursapharm-Arena an der Kaiserlinde with 10 points from their first seven matchdays. Mainz’s Robin Zentner returned in goal for the first time since Matchday 3, while head coach Vincent Wagner made five changes to his starting line-up following a midweek DFB Cup exit, restoring Maximilian Rohr, Felix Keidel, Francis Onyeka, Maurice Krattenmacher and David Mokwa to the side.

Mainz started the second half with more possession but struggled to create danger. A Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer effort was ruled out by the video assistant referee in the 66th minute for offside after Zentner had picked him out.
Elversberg brought on substitutes including Campbell, who struck in stoppage time with an acrobatic to make it 4-0. Moments later, Benedict Hollerbach pulled one back for Mainz from close range after Königsdörffer’s pass, with the away side’s night worsening further as Stefan Posch was shown a second yellow card, and sent off, in stoppage time.
